The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

As well as having a preposterously elongated title, The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society is a funny, sweet and at times truly sad historical romantic comedy drama. When she finally heads there she forges a strong bond with its members, especially Michiel Huisman's Dawsey, despite the fact she is engaged to American War hero Mark Reynolds, played by Glen Powell. We actually got to go to the island of Guernsey, all of us, and talk to a lot of the locals and they have sort of a museum that memorializes this period and history, from when they were occupied by the Nazis.

The book is set in and is an epistolary novel , composed of letters written from one character to another. In January , year-old Juliet Ashton embarks on a cross-country tour across England to promote her latest book. Written under her pen-name Izzy Bickerstaff , the book is a compilation of comedic columns she wrote about life during World War II. Despite the fact that she was initially contracted to write another Izzy Bickerstaff book, Juliet writes to her publisher that she wants to retire the pseudonym. On her tour Juliet is greeted with flowers everywhere from the mysterious Markham V. Reynolds, Jr. Her best friend and publisher, Sidney, warns Juliet that Mark is a wealthy American trying to establish a publishing empire and looking to poach her.

You can read my review of the book here , which includes some background information on the authors. This is one my absolute favorite books, and I am satisfied with the movie—though it was changed up a little from the book. Below I have noted some of the changes.

Post a Comment. By Claire Booth. Warning: mild spoilers ahead. I loved that a book about the love of reading was such a success. I loved that a book with that mouthful of a title was a bestseller. So I was definitely hoping that I would love the movie, which recently came out on Netflix. It was taken by the Germans during the war and that occupation continues to haunt many of the characters after the Nazis withdraw.
