Disney's Beauty and the Beast by Ellen Titlebaum

In celebration of the new live action retelling, Disney Press has published a beautiful hardcover picture book that recounts the original fairytale the way generations of children first heard it. Beauty is the youngest of three sisters and her father is a voyaging merchant. When he loses his fortune and ends up lost in the woods, he is given food and shelter by a Beast. But after stealing a red rose for Beauty, the Beast demands that her father remain his prisoner. Gone are the enchanted objects, the enchanted rose, and even the name Belle. But it is still refreshing to experience the story in its most essential form.

All opinions are my own. Story time is always a favorite in this Neurotic Disney home. Books are wonderful on so many levels. We keep them everywhere — even in the car! Disney Books are a great way to keep Disney at home.

Posted by Bailey Cavender Mar 15, There are some authors who, whenever I see their name on a book, I have to pick it up. For me, one of those authors is Robin McKinley. All of her books are magical tales, told using rich language with compelling characters. Her novels tend to be told in the third-person, but there is one exception.

As such, it was virtually tailor-made for Disney. Here is a film that truly only has eyes for the Beauty and the Beast; unfortunately, this reverence makes for a far unholier union. The recent Disney remake formula is a simple one: Take a beloved animated tale say, Cinderella or The Jungle Book , cast some big-name celebrities, and then dial the opulence factor up to 11, turning a film everyone remembers into a grand, if somewhat hollow, homage for a new generation. The prologue, told as a series of stained-glass vignettes in the animated film, has been turned into an extravagant ball scene, with the posh, entitled Prince Dan Stevens raging the night away with his courtiers. I sat up straight in my seat at this hilariously sumptuous sight, something right out of the court of Louis XIV. But the Prince is quickly turned into a Beast for his arrogance, of course, and his servants are transformed into anthropomorphic appliances alongside him, quickly locking viewers into the story they know so well. In a nearby village, Belle Emma Watson is a bookish and beautiful girl doting on her inventor father Maurice Kevin Kline and batting away the repeated marriage proposals of a puffed-up suitor, Gaston Luke Evans.
