Bread and Roses, Too - Wikipedia

Katherine Paterson grew up in China the daughter of missionaries and was briefly a missionary herself. The new novel begins in Lawrence, Mass. Rosa is an immigrant girl, the studious daughter of a widowed Italian mother employed in the mills; Jake is an American ragamuffin and petty thief, a boy employed in the mills whose drunken father beats him. We learn that mill owners used to send agents to poor areas in Europe to recruit immigrants; workers at the Lawrence mills spoke as many as 45 different languages. Many stone carvers from northern Italy had settled in Barre where Paterson lives , attracted by the Vermont granite industry. They were active politically and not only took in children during the strike but raised money for their families. The news that she is going to be sent to Vermont gives Rosa one more thing to worry about.
