Novel: He, She and It by Marge Piercy
He, She and It by Marge Piercy. He, She and It by Marge Piercy is my all-time favorite science fiction novel. That Piercy borrows from Gibson and others does not make her work derivative in any way. The main character is Shira Shipman who, as the novel opens, is getting a divorce from her husband, Josh, who is granted custody of their only son, Ari. Shira, in depression at the loss of her son, leaves the dystopian space of the Y-S dome and travels home to the less oppressive, more environmentally-friendly Tikva to live in this more utopian world with her lively grandmother Malkah. It turns out that Avram, with the help of Malkah, has created an illegal cyborg named Yod.

Winner of the Arthur C. The time is the middle of the twenty-first century. It is in this world that Shira Shipman struggles to find her place. Now, as the novel opens, she is returning to Tikva, the Jewish free town where she was raised. If the cyborg is man-built, it is woman-programmed, and that woman has been a lifelong rebel and sexual iconoclast. Read the First Chapter. Interweaving these two stories, Marge Piercy creates a vast physical and emotional tapestry, playing the ancient against the futuristic, the mythical against the technological and the most fundamental relationships-child and parent, grandchild and grandparent, woman and man-against the most startling: human and that which is made by human hands.
The year is After the Two Week War of which nearly destroyed human civilization as we know it, the world is now run by twenty-seven enterprises — commonly referred to as the multis — which have formed their own social hierarchies and standards of living. Despite the huge gap between the rich and the poor, technology has never been more advanced. People in this new world communicate by plugging themselves into machines and projecting themselves into Cyberspace. This is the world of He, She, and It.
