As you continue to savor literature throughout your life, you'll encounter five important elements to any narrative: character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme.

10 Common Themes in Literature

Theme in literature is a topic we've delved into before. Every story has themes — whether they're consciously explored or simmering under the surface — and the exploration of different themes adds depth and layers to any story, especially if those themes are universal. So today we're taking a look at some of the most popular themes explored in the world of books, through some specific literary theme examples. From broad, sweeping concepts, like love or death, to more particular ideas, like coming of age or good vs. Here goes! Don't have time to read the whole post right now? No problem.

With state testing fast approaching, I have found myself carefully analyzing our benchmark assessments for instructional focus. One of our identified areas to address includes identifying the theme of a passage. Being new to the grade level, I wasn't sure if this went beyond my familiar 3rd grade goal of understanding a fable. After some work and research, I'm ready to share how you can teach theme in the upper grades. One way you can help your students decipher the difference between a theme and a summary is to start by simply labeling any charts you create for theme as " THE ME ssage. It can be more complicated than the moral explicitly stated at the end of a fable. Also, a story or novel can have multiple themes woven throughout and go far beyond a word such as "friendship," though identifying a key word is a great first step in identifying a theme.

Create a List

Every book has a theme and we often see the same theme in many books. It's also common for a book to have many themes. A theme may show up in a pattern such as reoccurring examples of beauty in simplicity. It is often a lesson that we learn about life or people. We can better understand book themes when we think about the stories we know from childhood. In "The Three Little Pigs," for example, we learn that it's not wise to cut corners by building a straw house.
